3 Things Every Small Business Owner Should Ask When Choosing a Provider to do Post Offer Screening

Perhaps you are a small business owner and you only hire between 1-50 employees per year.  Maybe you have had several employees who weren’t prepared for the demands of your work.  Perhaps these individuals have been hurt frequently, thus hurting your bottom line from high workman’s compensation expenses.   You finally decide to invest some time and energy in a testing procedure to make sure you are hiring a strong workforce that fits your needs.  There are some things you need to consider when looking for a vendor to provide post-offer testing for your new hires.

1.     Look for someone who views your needs as important and rivals those of larger customer(s). Even if you are a small fish in the providers pond, you want someone who is available when you have a hiring need.  Any delays in getting new hires tested can certainly have a negative impact on your business.  Larger businesses can absorb work for longer periods of time than you will be.  Getting new employee started ASAP is vital.

2.     Look for someone with extensive experience working with a variety of employer sizes and industries.  A well rounded and experienced clinician will be more intuitive and investigative when designing the Job Demands Analysis(JDA), which the post-offer-testing should be designed from.  The more familiar they are with your industry the better the design of the JDA and the post-offer test.

3.     They need to be well versed in the difference between post-offer testing and pre-work screening.  It its important they can provide you with the data you need to decide what kind of testing will best work for you.  If they’re not even sure of the differences and the requirements of the EEOC and ADA, your testing program will have a negative impact on your business.

When you own a small business, it is vital to keep a close tab on your bottom line.  One way to do this is to hire workers capable of doing the work your business requires.  This will ensure they stay on the job and out of the workman’s compensation world.  Having a strong post-offer screening program will help with this.  There are several thing to consider when hiring a provider to start a program for you, more than I have listed, but these should give you a good start.
